The road to hair repair can be tricky, depending on how you have been treating your hair and for how long. When seasons switch, the damage to your hair can be even more apparent than usual. But no matter the season, hair repair is a must, and it’s a journey everyone at Galen Colour would love to help you with. Keep on reading to learn the basics of hair repair and get some tips from our team.
Shampoo With Care for Hair Repair
The culprit: Wrong product, too much product, rough handling… Shampooing sounds easy, but you could be doing more damage than good, if you’re not doing it right. We know, shampooing shouldn’t be a science, but it should be done correctly.
The solution: Gently shampoo your scalp and hair always, because hair is at its weakest when it’s wet. Pick the right shampoo for hair repair, or consult with your hairdresser to decide which one is the right for your hair type. Don’t forget to use lukewarm water, and seal it all in with a good cold rinse once you’re done to seal in the cuticle.
Wealth is in Rich Hair Masks and Treatments
The culprit: Hair that’s exposed to chlorine, salt, sun, products, hot tools and isn’t nourished with a mask, is slowly but surely losing its shine, elasticity and overall health.
The solution: A good hair mask tailored to your hair type and concern. Hair masks are not the same as conditioners. They hold a high concentration of active ingredients that moisturise, regenerate and nourish, even when you’ve rinsed them out! They aren’t meant for everyday use, so conditioners are still a must. You can use them once or twice a week, depending on your needs and how often you wash your hair.
Our product faves are, as always, Pureology treatments.
Turn Down the Sizzle
The culprit: Hot tools are gold for styling at home, but when it comes to hair repair, you’ve got to turn down the sizzle and give those hot tools a rest. Straighteners, blow dryers and curling irons cause heat damage, manifesting through dryness, frizziness and brittleness.
The solution: Obviously, if you can give up all hot tools for a period of time, it would be the best thing to do. However, knowing this isn’t realistic for a lot of you who have to style your hair quickly or on the daily, we suggest lowering the temperature settings on your tools. Another tip is to look into air-dry formulas of products that help you dry your hair quickly without using hot tools.
Prep and Protect
The culprit: Doing all the fun things to your hair while not offering any protection can be detrimental to your hair health. Things like using hot tools all the time, swimming in the ocean or pool etc.
The solution: One or two products will suffice and make a huge difference for your hair. Products such as a leave-in conditioner and a heat protectant are TWO MUST HAVES!
Lean Into the Help From Pros
The culprit: When you’re not sure what your hair type is, or even not aware of your hair problems, then you might even be doing more damage to your hair by picking the wrong products.
The solution: This is where we happily step in to lend a helping hand (or a product). Sometimes hair needs more than a good mask or a trim. Sometimes the only thing that will bring it back is professional treatment at the salon. And if you’re not sure whether you’re the candidate for this kind of treatment, ask us!
